Set in the 80’s in rural Florida, Amy Nielsen’s breakout novel is a realistic and gritty portrayal of the tough journey facing pregnant teens. Angela Carter is a bright, promising high school junior who ends up with the wrong guy at an end-of-summer party. The reaction of her dysfunctional family leaves her few options, but she makes the heroic decision to accept the responsibility of her actions. Overcoming self-doubt, the rejection from her peers, and the emotional isolation that follows give the reader and those who share her experience hope and direction.
The novel’s subject matter and brutal honesty is sure to raise eyebrows among those hellbent on censoring writers who tell it like it is. However, Nielsen is on a mission to help young women through a trial that she herself faced. Besides, books that risk being banned is often an indication that they're well worth reading. Worth It deserves a seat next to Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak which is high praise indeed.
